Biographical data
András János Krafcsik was born on December 31, 1918, in Nagymihály (Michalovce, Zemplén County) to János Krafcsik, a Greek Catholic priest, and Anna Suba. He completed his secondary education between 1929 and 1937 with the Franciscan friars in Malacka. He pursued his theological studies in Uzhhorod, Olomouc, and Budapest, and spent a significant portion of World War II in Hungary.

From 1942 to 1944, he worked as a religion teacher and also served as choir director at the cultural center in Novi Sad. During the final phase of the war, between 1944 and 1945, he performed military service. He was ordained a priest by Blessed Pál Péter Gojdič, Bishop of Eperjes, on August 28, 1945, at the shrine in Lutina. Contemporary sources specifically note that he was ordained while still unmarried.

Following his ordination, he served as the bishop’s secretary in Eperjes from 1945 to 1946. From 1946 to 1947, he was the administrator of the parish of Jastrabie, and from 1947 to 1950, he served as an assistant pastor and catechist in Nagytárkány (Trebišov). As a result of the communist persecution of the Church, he was forced into hiding in 1950 and eventually left Czechoslovakia.

In 1951, he spent half a year providing pastoral care to Ukrainian Greek Catholic refugees living in Kufstein, Austria. He then studied at the Collegium Russicum in Rome and prepared for emigration, eventually settling in Canada. On December 12, 1952, in Hamilton, he celebrated the first Byzantine liturgy in the Slovak language, which was a significant event in the history of the Canadian Slovak Greek Catholic community.

From 1952 to 1957, he served as pastor of St. Michael’s Slovak Parish in Windsor and St. Mary’s Hungarian Parish. At the same time, he played an important role in organizing the Slovak Greek Catholic press in Canada: he served as the first editor of the monthly magazine *Maria*, founded in 1954. From 1957 to 1959, he was the pastor of the Holy Spirit Parish in Welland.

In 1959, he entered the novitiate of the Byzantine Rite branch of the Redemptorist Order. He completed his novitiate training in Meadowvale and Keswick, while also providing pastoral care in Oshawa. On September 8, 1963, he took his perpetual vows in the Redemptorist Order in Toronto. According to Hungarian Greek Catholic sources, in 1969 he served as secretary to Dr. Lajos Minya, the Redemptorist provincial superior. This information is reported in the work by István Marosi and Anita Marosi titled *Historical Directory of Priests of the Greek Catholic Diocese of Munkács*; however, the Redemptorist archival materials have not yet confirmed this service, so its exact location and circumstances require further research.

Between 1960 and 1961, he served as an assistant pastor at St. Michael’s Church in Gary, Indiana, as part of the Greek Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. From 1961 to 1964, he served as an assistant pastor at St. Mary’s Church on Shaw Street in Toronto, while continuing to edit the magazine *Maria*. He then served as a socius in Meadowvale and assisted with the work of the Slovak parish in Oshawa.

From 1967 to 1968, he was an assistant pastor in Roblin, Manitoba, and then served as pastor there from 1968 to 1969. From 1969 to 1970, he served as an assistant pastor in Wynyard, and from 1970 to 1972, in Ituna (Saskatchewan).

In 1973, he served in the United States as an assistant pastor at Holy Family Church in Washington, D.C., and as an assistant pastor at St. Mary’s Church in New York City. From 1974 to 1976, on behalf of the Greek Catholic Diocese of Passaic, he served as administrator of St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, as well as at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Nanticoke. From 1976 to 1984, he served as assistant pastor at St. Mary’s Church in Wilkes-Barre.

In 1984, he returned to Canada, where he served as an assistant pastor in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, until 1995. During this time, he also engaged in missionary work and, following the fall of communism, returned to Slovakia on several occasions to provide pastoral care. From 1995 to 2003, he served as an assistant pastor for the Greek Catholic community in Markham.

After his retirement, he lived in Yorkton. In May 2007, he returned to his hometown of Nagymihály to spend his final months with his fellow Redemptorists. He passed away on April 22, 2008.
