Biographical data
His original surname was Haupt. His parents were József Laczkovits and Irma Mária Terézia Frang; he had two siblings. He graduated from high school in Győr and completed his seminary studies in Esztergom. He was ordained a priest on June 16, 1935. According to his later notes written in Austria, the GPU (the Soviet political police) had previously attempted to recruit him, but he resisted, and to avoid his expected arrest, he fled across the border on May 20, 1947. He moved to the United States on December 14, 1958, at which time he listed his citizenship as Austrian. According to Diós, he died in Salinas, Canada, but there is no town by that name in Canada; it is only found in California. According to Beke, he died in Salinas, CA, USA. According to the California Department of Civil Registration, his place of death was Monterey, CA, USA.
