Biographical data
His surname was Jesztl until 1950. In 1941, he entered the Carmelite Order in Győr, where he was given the name Chrysostom; after his novitiate, he graduated from high school with the Premonstratensians. On the advice of his superiors, he studied theology as a lay student, first in Budapest and then, beginning in 1946, in Vienna. From 1948, he studied law and political science in Innsbruck, and in 1950 he emigrated to the United States. In 1952, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, and in 1958, a master’s degree in New York. He taught at numerous universities as a lecturer in political science and history. His research focused on religion and the status of the Church in Central Europe. Between 1988 and 1990, he completed his theological studies in Ottawa and Montreal, and upon finishing his teaching career, he retired. On June 16, 1990, he was ordained a deacon in Eger, and on February 26, 1991, he was ordained a priest in Ottawa to serve Hungarian emigrants.
