His parents were Ferenc and Mária Morvay. He completed his high school studies in New York, then served as a soldier in the 3310th Signal Service Corps on the European theater of war from 1943 to 1946. After his discharge, he worked for the New York Telephone Company. He completed his theological studies at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, MI. He was ordained a priest in 1960.
