He is a second-generation Hungarian. His parents were Mátyás Kató and Mária Bodnár, and he has one younger sister. He pursued his seminary studies at the Divine Heart Mission Seminary, then at Saint Fidelis Seminary, and completed them at the Pontifical Seminary Josephinum in Worthington, OH. He was ordained a priest on May 30, 1948, in Worthington, OH, by Cardinal Amieto Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate. He retired on August 20, 1994, but continued to serve as an assistant pastor until his death. He passed away at Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
